Subject: How to setup gmail app on ZN5 (MOTOZINE zn5)?
I am trying to set up the gmail mobile 2.06 application for WiFi use
on my brand-new Tmobile USA  ZN5, but I don't seem to be able to get
things quite right.  Downloading and installing the application works
without a hitch, but when I try to open Gmail, I get the dreaded "This
program requires a working data connection. Please check your signal
strength and connection settings and then restart."

Accessing the web through the browser is working fine, so I suspected
that this was just a problem with the Application Settings, but I
tried all the combinations I could think of and still couldn't get it
to work.  Clicking Gmail ->Options -> Manage -> Application Settings
produces a menu with three items: "Data Connections",  "Allow
Deletion", and "Permissions".

Under the "Data Connections" option I tried selecting each of Kodak,
WiFi, Java Session, t-zones, and PictureMessaging, one after another,
but the aberrant behavior  remained the same. (Since I don't have a
data plan and am trying to access gmail from a WiFi connection, I
suspect the right selection here would be 'WiFi', but this didn't work
any better than any of the other options)

Under the "Permissions" option all the options were greyed out & none
looked useful in any case.  The closest option looked to be "Network",
but I suspect this means cell network access and doesn't affect
anything.

For now I am limited to accessing my gmail through the mobile version
of the gmail website, so any help you could provide would be greatly
appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

I'm in this exact same situation. Tmobile tech support say's it's
googles fault and I need to buy a data plan for my phone, but I dont
believe them on either count. Sounds like they havent given users the
ability to modify permissions on applications they install on their
phone. The below link is dead for me, so I dont know that it says. Did
anyone ever find a solution to this problem?

I'm having the same problem with Google Maps. After installing the
app, an error msg says "This application cannot be used until you
grant it permission to send and receive data over the network." The
network is whatever connection you are using. Now, select the app
(Google Maps), click options/manage/application settings. After
setting data connections to Wifi, click permissions/Network access.
The only permission it will allow is 'no access'. The problem is that
Java has been locked down. Can this be modified somewhere else?
