I have always had a problem, even when I was in the military, with military bases that allow ONLY the military police to be armed. This is exactly what you get. This is not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last. The only difference here is that the media found out about it. Usually they don't.

Absolutely Joy, I see that all too many were ready to jump to the wrong conclusions some even suggesting that he must be black because it is mostly blacks who become Muslims. This, even before any real accurate news had been broadcast. Moderate Muslims are suffering the most awful abuse because of the acts of the radical and fanatical few who kill and maim in the name of their religion. It is the most awful tragedy.

That hasn't been reported here at all, but it did sound like he was mentally ill. He was fearful of being shipped out, and had heard all the terrible stuff from his patients. He was terrified and took a very bad turn in life.
According to radio reports, he had been giving his furniture and things away, so he was suicidal, and, maybe, took others with him. Who knows?
Just let those in charge do the investigation and stop with your rumors of abuse. I doubt that would be allowed at his rank.

He had been identified as a person with problems, of some standing. His family is telling the news reporters, as I write this, that he didn't want to ship out. When he joined the military, he wanted his medical education, but didn't think he should serve as others did.

Your day and mine have changed a lot of things in the military. They use the military to fight and support the fighters and not do mess duty, laundry or house cleaning. They hire civilians to that now. I think you'll notice that many civilians are engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan doing construction work and the Military Engineers are building forward operating bases like airstrips or villages for tribes to live in. It must go with the territory when you are fighting a war and trying to rebuild a country at the same time.

If you read the Qur'an, this is a matter of the religion.
The investigator's will get it right. The appearances of the Secretary of the Military (? title) and the person in charge of the fort, it looks quite different than what the BBC apparently has reported. Time will tell.
The shooter is apparently intubated and paralyzed, and he might have a long while to think about it, if he survives.

I remember the male psych. units, when we had state hospitals. They were usually silent,and then "bam!!', one ot the men just exploded. What we see here isn't unusual with a mentally ill man, especially an observant Msulim.
The women, in their wards, were noisy and often yelling and running around, but men sit and wait.

Indeed. But noting Norma's comment about the alleged harassment not being reported I did a google. I certainly heard it here in Oz and it's been reported all round the world but fewer hits in the US than I would have expected.

Sacha,
She was to undergo surgery this morning to have the bullets removed from her leg, the right one I think. Her spirits are good and of course she is being praised for her quick response. There are some errors in what was reported. She didn't retire from the Army and she is moving back to North Carolina to be with her Husband who is in the U.S. Special Forces. I believe he is with her in Texas now as a result of the shooting. They said the shooter shot around 100 rounds in three minutes or so and she shot four that put him down. This is going to be a long investigation I think mainly to find out what the trigger's were that set him off. He was due to go to Afghanistan but they didn't say when. This is all from the press so take it for what it is worth. Did I tell you that the BBC was the first to report this incident followed by CNN?

The unusual thing about this shooting is that it was a muslim who carried it out, and that he was born in America.
