There was a rather good programme about political correctness on the (let me whisper it, in case any of those BBC haters are out there) BBC, last week (Clive Anderson in the chair). It made plain the fact that most of the attacks against political correctness which appear in certain newspapers are debunked by the facts. There were some amusing examples. You can listen again to it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/pcrip/pip/mj1qc/ Your list is an entertaining illustration of that.

This is known as the "Bradley Effect" you may have heard of. It came about several years ago when, then Mayor of the City of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley (a black man) was the Democratic candidate for the Governor of the State of California. He went into the election with a 7-10 point lead over the Republican candidate (don't recall who that was) according to the "polls". The Republican won by about 10 points, so where did the lead evaporate to? The pundits surmised, probably correctly, that the lead was never there in the first place. That when voters were polled, probably even on "exit" polls, they said they voted for the black man when actually, being alone in the voting booth, they opted for the white candidate. It's a shame but it's real. Of course in the current election there's talk of a "Pahlin Effect" - Republicans saying there for McCain when they'll actually vote Obama. Oh well.

The sad part about the incident is that Bradley would have made a wonderful governor. He did an outstanding job of resurrecting Los Angeles.

Personally I hate being called Ms. I am Mrs and proud of it.
Now I am no longer married so it's quite inappropriate, but even when I was I didn't like the idea that I was someone's appendage. I have refused to marry again though I have lived with Jimmy for just short of 27 years. I don't like the idea of the state writing the contract of my relationship, I would prefer to write it myself.
An interesting point of view - thank you for sharing it. jingles

I never looked upon myself as an appendage or a subservient member in a marriage....we were partners. I guess it is all in the way you look at it. jingles

I didn't say I felt like an appendage, I said being called Mrs. somebody identifie one as an appendage. I guess if I felt like one I wouldn't mind being called one, it's because I didn't feel like one that I objected.
