Bea and Nell knew "The Gruffalo" almost by heart, when they were very young. No time for Enid Blyton, but most of the short list of books have been favourites at some time or another. They absolutely loved Roald Dahl's "Big Friendly Giant", and turned it into a daytime game and I always had to be the giant and Nell was Sophie. "Where the Wild Things Are" was another favourite but then they also liked the series of books called The Animals of Farthing Wood.. I see they have made a film of Where Wild Things Are.
Nell loved "Just William" but Bea cried over "Watership Down" but then so did I. Poor girls, I made them sit through all my favourites too, but at least it got them to sleep.

I'll pick some out of the long list:
Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket--these came along when Leah was older, and she rather liked the series.
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White--Yes, that was a favorite. \ Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown--A favorite when Leah was a baby!
Paddington Bear by Michael Bond--We rather liked all of the Paddington Bear series
Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter--more favorites. We have almost all of them.
The Cat In The Hat by Dr Seuss--We loved those too. One of the Dr. Seuss books was the first thing I caught Leah reading by herself. Initially, I thought she had just memorized it, but it turned out she could read things she had never heard.
The Snowman by Raymond Briggs--I'm sure we have this and that Leah enjoyed it.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle--a definite favorite
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak--main memory of this was how turned off Leah was when she had to read this in school, having read it herself many years before then.
Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

Wanna bet? Since it seems that kids books are Universal there must be something on that list that you know and like and read to your kids. There are a lot that I love, that haven't even made the list. "Mumfy" for instance, and "Guess How Much I Love You". That always made me cry, because both Nell and Bea would both give me the hugest hug when we got to the last line that reads, I would say "I love you right up to the moon", and they would say, "“And I love you right up to the moon and back.”

I read not one of the short list to my children. I read them a few on the long list, but they read more of them on their own.
I stand firm. Mother Goose MUST be the first book read to small children. Anything else is a cheap substitute. I have spoken.

LOL OK Seth, when I have my next babies, I will make a point of reading Mother Goose to them, every night. Promise, no substitutes.:-)

I read Grimm's Fairy Tales again within the past year. I'm not sure I ever read it to my kids.
