I put up four images, just use the right arrow. It was about an hour
after sunrise and I was on the school campus waiting for the little
trolls to arrive when I noticed this light tan bird high atop a pine.
A hawk, I figured and took out the camera. Even at maximum zoom I
can't get close enough to see what I actually have. At times, it looks
like an owl. In any case it is the first time I've seen one like him
in town.

My guess is Kestril (sparrow hawk) Was it small, maybe slightly larger
than robin?

Your photo has pretty good detail and the people at rec, bird will nail
it right off.

It was atop a 100 foot pine and may not be as large as it looked if
you consider that pine needles are what, maybe 6 to 8 inches at the
most? At least the color is accuirate, on the bird that is.

I looked in my guide and it says the Kestril is 9 inches in height.
That seems to fit the pine needles in the photo. BTW, Larry Sheldon on
Rec Birds agrees with you and I think I will agree and say thank you.

I'm in good company if Larry Sheldon thinks that is it. I think he is
very bird savvy.

Pretty sure that is it Sacha. We saw them quite frequently when in
California but only very seldom here in Oregon. I thought that was
because of change of territory but may be because of decline.

Head markings look like a falcon.
