I've never actually had a male dog, and the females have all been spayed, so this isn't something I have had to face. Having to cope with a bitch on heat, particularly, let us say, a mastiff, with amorous male dogs around must be a nightmare. I have a friend whose JR will hump everything in sight, table legs, people legs, cushions, other male dogs, and that is even after the snip. We just ignore him, but strangers are a bit surprised. This is a bad time of the year for some dogs and for animals in general. Fireworks can completely traumatise them and few veterinary tranquillisers seem to work effectively.

They are for sure. Pickles was never too worried, and here of course we can see them but rarely hear them. Benji though doesn't seem to like the smell of whatever is left floating in the air after fireworks. Taking them for their last run it hung in the air like the remains of bonfire smoke as if it was in our own garden. Big Public Party not far from here and again we will see them and probably hear the louder ones. None of the other animals seems too worried, but I do check regularly. I probably wouldn't even recognise Jen now, she must be almost fully grown. B
