I was somewhat surprised to see this hadn't already made the rounds
here (The name "Shaniya" hadn't turned up in a body-search of the
group, so if it's been discussed, apologies & perhaps I just spelled
the name wrong), but here you go.  I couldn't help but to think from
the picture of the perp carrying the little girl that he couldn't have
been much taller than 5' himself - maybe why he wanted a little girl?
I dunno'. Hope they find her. :-(

Mother of missing 5-year-old NC girl charged

(AP) – 8 hours ago

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The mother of a 5-year-old girl who disappeared
in North Carolina was charged Saturday with human trafficking and
other offenses, though authorities said they still did not know the
girl's whereabouts.

Antoinette Nicole Davis, the mother of Shaniya (shuh-'NY-uh) Davis,
faces a child abuse charge involving prostitution as well as filing a
false police report, according to a news release from the Fayetteville
Police Department. The release did not say whether the charges were
related to her daughter's disappearance. Telephone messages and an
e-mail left for police were not immediately returned.

<snip>

Surveillance footage showed Mario Andrette McNeill carrying Shaniya
into a hotel room, and he was arrested and charged with kidnapping
Friday.

<snip>

Shaniya's father, Bradley Lockhart, told The Associated Press he
raised his daughter for several years but last month decided to let
her stay with her mother. He said Davis struggled financially over the
years, but she recently obtained a job and her own place, so Lockhart
decided to give her a chance to raise their daughter.

"I should've never let her go over there," he said Saturday night.
Lockhart said police have not told him whether they are any closer to
finding his daughter.

"I just want her to come back safe my friend," he said. "I love her
very much and I hope she is OK."

I've been following this one.  It's been up and down all week.  Last I heard
they are doing a ground search of a wooded area for her, so it's *down*
again.   Earlier in the week we were hopeful she might be alive, but with
her abductor arrested, it's looking pretty bleak now.  :(   It's looking
like the mother only wanted her to make money.  She'd only been with the
mother a month or so.  A beautiful little girl.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Authorities have suspended their search for a
5-year-old girl reported missing by her mother, who is charged with human
trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution.

Fayetteville police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said the search for Shaniya
Nicole Davis will resume Monday morning.

---

Sky 5 footage of the scene showed Walker Road blocked off and law
enforcement vehicles parked along the road. K-9 units were at the scene, and
officers searched a kudzu-covered ravine off the highway.

----

Late Saturday, Shaniya's mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis, was charged with
human trafficking, felony child abuse - prostitution, filing a false police
report and resist, delay or obstruct an officer. She is being held in the
Cumberland County Detention Center under a $51,000 bond.

Chance said that arrest documents say Davis "knowingly provide(d) Shaniya
Davis with the intent that she be held in sexual servitude" and she
"permit(ted) an act of prostitution."

Police find body of missing 5-year-old

Posted: Today at 6:04 a.m.
Updated: 11 minutes ago

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The body of missing 5-year-old Shaniya Nicole Davis was
recovered Monday afternoon, Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine said.

The child was first reported missing from her home, at 1116-A Sleepy Hollow
Drive, by her mother last Tuesday morning. On Friday, Mario Andrette
McNeill, 29, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, and late Saturday,
her mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis, 25, was arrested on accusations that
she prostituted her daughter.

Fayetteville police received a tip Sunday that Shaniya's body was dumped
along Walker Road, off N.C. Highway 87, said Theresa Chance, spokeswoman for
the Fayetteville Police Department. About 250 law enforcement agents and
volunteers searched the area Monday morning, but they moved farther south
after noon.

Searchers focused on an area about 6 miles from the last confirmed sighting
of Shaniya. She was seen on security video at the Comfort Suites hotel in
Sanford, along with a man who police believe is McNeill, last Tuesday
morning.

I've lost track of who posted what, but anyway thx for this last, rich link.
Lots of good stuff there. Interesting seeing the suspect in front of a judge
without counsel. The judge essentially mirandized her before appointing a
public defender. Judge asked her over and over, do you understand? May seem
he's being kind, but what he's doing is making sure it's all covered - no
appealable issues down the track from his courtroom.

And about the defendent, the child's mother, she's extremely good looking,
SO not the skanky-ho look I anticipated by a long shot. Thin - must be the
drugs? I'm assuming a drug habit is what drove this whole crime?

The video of the mother's aunt is impressive. Very well-spoken woman, hard
to believe she has a niece who'd pimp out her own 5yo.

So sorry for the dad and his sister who raised that baby. He must be asking
himself over and over why he let the child's mother have a chance. It looks
to me that the reason the mother wanted her back was to rent her out? But
why did she call LE to report the child missing, I wonder?

A sad end to the search for missing girl
A little more than a week before Shaniya Davis vanished, her mother told
Carey Lockhart, the aunt who helped raise the 5-year-old, that she'd never
see Shaniya again.

Those words echoed in Lockhart's head Monday, hours before searchers pulled
a body police think was Shaniya's from a thicket of kudzu along the border
of Lee and Harnett counties.

"If I'd only known ... ," Lockhart said Monday, her voice trailing off into
sobs. She had helped rear the girl since infancy.

snipped>>

Traded between homes

Shaniya has bounced between homes since birth, shared between a mother and a
father who conceived her during a chance encounter one night. Carey Lockhart
had been the girl's primary guardian because her father, Bradley Lockhart,
worked long stretches as a building contractor at out-of-state jobs.

"There was no denying that she was his," Carey Lockhart said of the
resemblance between Shaniya and her father.

Lockhart described Shaniya as a joyful girl who loved to dress up in pretty
clothes and make her cousins laugh. She was a kindergartner at Morganton
Road Elementary School in Fayetteville.

Though Bradley Lockhart and Antoinette Davis never married, they shared
responsibility for Shaniya from the start. Davis' interaction with her
daughter was typically limited to occasional weekend visits, Lockhart said.
Their custody arrangement was never formalized by the courts.

But 21/2 weeks ago, Lockhart said, the informal parenting arrangement
dissolved.

Shaniya went to visit her mother on Oct. 31. Lockhart said she packed
Shaniya enough clothes for two days and expected to pick her up that Sunday.

But on Sunday morning, Lockhart said, Davis called and told her that she'd
never see Shaniya again. Lockhart said Davis was angry that she had
disciplined Shaniya for getting into a fight with her cousins.

"I was at a loss; I had no idea what to do," said Lockhart, who had no
formal custody of Shaniya and could not demand her return.

"I knew when [my brother] came home, we were going to have to go to court
and make some changes so we didn't have to endure this," Lockhart said.

That resolution never came. Bradley Lockhart had not returned from a job in
Oregon when Shaniya disappeared.

Last Tuesday, Lockhart rang his sister with bizarre news. A neighbor called
him to say that police were looking for Shaniya.

As they were talking on the phone, police knocked on Carey Lockhart's door.
They had found her name listed as a guardian at Shaniya's elementary school.

A million thoughts raced through Carey Lockhart's head: Maybe her mother was
hiding her? Maybe someone wanted to collect a ransom from her brother?

She peppered police with questions. They grilled her right back. She feared
they suspected she had done something to Shaniya. She buckled in tears and
remembers police relenting.

"I was about to die," Lockhart said. "I cannot describe the devastation. All
the things I could have done different."

Listening to 6:00 news:

Body has been identified as Shaniya.

Brad Lockhart has six children by three different women.

911 call released, listen to it at link below:

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/6435879/

also at link, video of Shaniya's father making statement this afternoon,
portion of that statement:

It's not the result I wanted. It's not the result any father or family would
want for their children," Lockhart said. "My heart hopes and bleeds and
prays that this community (and) this country can possibly unite as one to
prevent something like this from happening again to another special angel."

As he stood amid a shrine of flowers and teddy bears in his front yard, he
said he was "appalled and disgusted" about the possibility that his daughter
was sold as a sex slave.

Lockhart's sister, Carey Lockhart-Davis, urged people to help any child they
see who might be in danger.

"Don't let another innocent bystander go unnoticed because we, as adults,
fail to realize that they depend on us for safety and trust," Lockhart-Davis
said as she choked back tears. "To every pedophile, every person who thinks
of taking a child, please beware . I'll be watching."

She said she felt "robbed" because her special bond with her niece has been
broken. She recalled helping Shaniya learn how to tie her shoes and color
pictures.

"She had such a wonderful, kind soul, and her spirit and smile brightened
every day of everyone she touched," she said.

Shaniya's death is the second family tragedy for Lockhart. Eleven years ago,
his former wife, Vicki Lockhart, was one of three people killed in a home
invasion in Cumberland County.

Although Lockhart said he would try to forgive Davis for Shaniya's
disappearance and death, his sister said she never cared for Davis and how
she cared for her children.

"Never have I allowed my children to live in an environment that was
unsafe," Lockhart-Davis said.

Lockhart said he didn't want to blame anyone for Shaniya's death, saying he
could have done things differently himself.

"Every parent would blame themselves. We all look within ourselves to see
what we could have done differently," he said.

I'm wondering about this Lockhart guys selection of women to bear his
children.  At least two of the three appear to have a lot of violent
characters in their lives.

Thanks, Bella. :-(  I figured it wouldn't end good for this one, it
seemed inevitable that this child would almost have to be dead just
from the little bits of knowledge that we did have about her
whereabouts & who all she was with when last publicly seen. The
surveillance of that man carrying her into the hotel room was all I
really would've needed to figure it out, though.

May justice be swift and painful.  :-|

A bit more of reading the local boards, there was a BOLO for a 60 yr. old
white male with a rap sheet for sex crimes.  The only place I've seen this
is on message board.

Also, word is that the father of the baby murder mom is pregnant with now,
has AIDS.  That would be the guy the mother first gave up as the kidnapper.

Did see someone else make mention of the fathers changing dialects, which is
something I too had noticed after hearing him speak a couple of different
times.  Sometimes the father has a 'southern/black/Lumbee/red neck' type
accent, other times it isn't evident at all.  When he is speaking on
national TV it's gone, when he's speaking locally, with his *friends*, he
has a thick dialect.

When the child was shown going into the hotel room alive, I thought this one
might turn out differently from so many others. I still don't have a handle

I don't think we know the whole story yet.  Something is missing.  Why would
he take her from Fayetteville to Sanford?  Sanford is just a one horse
place, not really *near* anything.  The only reason I can think of, is if
someone else had contracted for the child.  Was he bringing her to Sanford
for someone else to purchase her services.  But WTF would they meet in a
hotel?  Doesn't make any sense that a hand-off would be in such a public
place.  Perhaps the guy never showed up?   And Shaniya's father is really
bugging the hell out of me too.  The aunt, father's sister, is the only one
who seemed genuinely concerned with her welfare.

And why are they continuing this farce about 'daddy letting mommy have a
chance with the child?' when it's obvious that wasn't the case.  The aunt
even admitted 'she dropped Shaniya off with two days of clothes, for her
*usual* week-end with her mother.'  And then the mother refused to give her
back.

who was carrying the child into the motel room who is now under arrest for
kidnapping, right? He spent an hour or less at the motel, is that right?
What I can't get is - do they have tape of him carrying the child out of the
motel or what? Or tape of him leaving alone?

Let's see, there is also that feces covered blanket that belonged to
Shaniya, found in the neighbors trash the morning she went missing. That
plays in here somewhere.  I haven't heard if the sister was at home the
night this all transpired either.

Mom had to come up with something to account for the child's disappearance
because her daddy was coming home from his trip to Oregon that day or the
next.

And I don't get this discreptancy between the aunt who cared for Shaniya
saying she was only to be gone for the week-end,and the father saying he'd
given her to her mom because 'mom wanted to be a mother.'

On the news tonight, there was an interview with a friend of the father, who
said 'he'd warned the father to not let Shaniya go to her mothers, that
after she was staying with the mother he noticed cigarette burns on her
arms.'  this guy claims he warned the father a number of times.

Omigawd. I knew it was one of those sorts that took over and ran riot, but a
foot per day is just unbelievable.

Yeah - I hope they are finetoothcoming his life too.  At this point, I
don't trust any of em.

That kid never had a chance with that bunch. The really awful thing
is - there are untold thousands of kids about to face this kind of
future. And why?  Because we live in an anything goes world?
