Poor little guy, 6-Year-Old Ga. Boy Who Vanished A Week Ago Found Slain; Officials Say Four May Face Charges
A 6-year-old boy who vanished a week ago while playing near his trailer-park home was found slain Thursday after a registered sex offender and three other suspects stymied investigators for days with conflicting stories of the youngster's fate.
Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said all four suspects would probably be charged with murder in the slaying of Christopher Michael Barrios. Doering said it was obvious the boy had been killed, but he would not say how and would not disclose how long the body had been there.
The body was found in a black trash bag among some trees and brush just 15 feet from a roadside behind the Glynn County Airport. A Department of Natural Resources game warden helping in the search, Cpl. Jesse Cook, said he and a co-worker stopped to investigate when they spotted tire marks where a car had pulled off the road.
Once they got out to look, they found the bag in plain sight.
"It was obvious," Cook said. "But if you weren't looking for it, you probably would've thought it was just a trash bag."
About 60 volunteer searchers, many wearing T-shirts printed with the boy's photo, hugged and wept as Doering confirmed Christopher's death to reporters.
"You suspected all along in your heart, it's just not the outcome you want," said Mari Charnock. "At least we know, though. At least it's over."
Earlier this week, police arrested four people _ a convicted child molester living in the trailer park, his parents and a friend of theirs _ in connection with the boy's disappearance.
Investigators said the four told a tangle of conflicting and ever-shifting stories _ that they knew nothing about the boy's disappearance, that the boy was still alive, and that he had been abducted, killed and buried. But repeated searches of the spots where the boy was supposedly buried turned up nothing, investigators said.
Doering said none of the tips from the suspects led to the discovery of the body. The body was found near the county airport, miles away from the patch of dense woods close to the trailer park where investigators were led to believe the boy had been buried.
Christopher lived with his father in a neighborhood of about 50 mobile homes along a narrow, U-shaped road just outside of Brunswick. Neighbors told police that they last saw the boy on the evening of March 8, playing by himself on the swing set outside a friend's home. One of his toys, a Star Wars lightsaber, was found beside the road.
George David Edenfield, a mentally slow 32-year-old man who lived with his parents across the street from the boy's grandmother, was arrested and charged with violating his probation from a 1997 child molestation conviction, which prohibits him from contact with children. Police said he admitted playing a role in Christopher's disappearance, but they would not be more specific.
Neighbors say the Edenfields moved into the mobile home park less than a year ago. Word soon spread that one of them was a convicted child molester, a rumor neighbors easily confirmed via Georgia's online sex offender registry.
Many kept their distance from the Edenfields' ramshackle trailer, with filled trash bags and aluminum cans piled under the rickety porch.
Neighbors said the man sometimes behaved like a child. Doering, the police chief, said the man is not mentally retarded _ "he's just not too bright" and sometimes responded to questions like a 5-year-old.
Edenfield's parents were jailed on charges of obstruction and lying to police because they first denied knowing anything about the boy's disappearance, then later said they knew he had been abducted, authorities said.
The same charges were brought against a fourth suspect, Donald Dale. Police said he told them he helped bury the boy.

Crap. I hate this, but am not surprised it turned out this way. The bizarre thing to me about this case is the whole "family" aspect of it. I wonder if Dad and the ever-so-lovely Mom were involved in killing the boy or if they were just trying to protect Junior.
It's really creepy, in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Sawyer family kind of way. :(

Amazing that nobody in the mobile home park saw anything happen (the abduction).
With paedophiles in organised gangs on the internet trying to lure kids out of their houses, I'm not sure if the kids are safer out in the playground on in the house anymore.

Like I said, I used to be against it, until 'one too many' child rapists/killers. For me it was a guy in S.C. who raped a two year old little girl and drown her in a mud puddle. The *straw* that broke this camels' back.

Regarding the earlier comment as to why no one in that trailer park saw the boy's abduction, etc. Could it have been dusk or even nearly too dark to see clearly? Could have just been the fact that it was around the dinner hour for most people.
I've noticed how people don't come outside much in neighborhoods anymore even when they aren't at work. Crime seeps in every where and I think many have the mentality 'if I don't see it I don't have to be involved'. Even in nice neighborhoods it can be dangerous to be outside.

His comments on the video didn't seem at all *slow*, retarded, unsure of what was going on around him, etc. He answered the reporters questions and made a few 'comments' of his own.
Boy do I just LOVE the irony surrounding this case. As usual with cases like this, the sex-offender hate-mongers with their stick-it-to- them mentalities have crawled out of their holes and described all sorts of murderous fantasies involving sex offenders. The irony is that the boy's grieving father is himself a convicted sex offender (a statutory rape offense when he was 24). Yes, the boy's own father! Yet those bone-headed Georgia politicians are in full force with their "you see, you see, if those bus stop restrictions had been enforced, that little boy would be alive today" -- apparently oblivious to the reality that those very restrictions would have caused great hardship in that little boy's life. The IRONY is intoxicating! Well, if there's one good thing about the boy's father being a sex offender, it's that he won't be pulling another Lunsford act -- pushing for a new and improved sex offender bill called "Christopher's law". Because those very laws would apply to him as well! LOL!

Would Christopher's father's sex offense happen to involve a CHILD or an adult? Sex offense listings have just recently begun to change in my state. Initially everyone was listed as a 'sex offender'. Law enforcement has gone back into the database and made it more specific as to whether a child was involved or an adult. IMO, there is a difference. A woman can get an attitude with a guy over consensual sex, press charges of rape and if found guilty that goes on his record. Most children don't do that sort of thing -- they are the victims.

The charge was *statutory* rape so it must have been with a "child" (which in Goergia could have been a 15-year-old). He was 24 at the time.

Trailer parks are sort of "intimate," and protective, though.
I recall driving into a quiet trailer park in Palo Alto (East side of the freeway) because my girlfriend had bought a tiny trailer and had moved in. I drove in slowly, parked, visited for about 15 min., and left. My friend said three neighbors set her straight on where the visitors are to park and where they shouldn't. I got the impression that even though I didn't see anyone see me, everyone saw me.
Plus, trailers' walls are thin, and you can hear conversations inside another trailer two doors down. Plus, it's high density living. People are nearby.
This is why it surprises me that nobody heard or saw anything.
