Several people who were close to 5-year-old Shaniya Davis and her father Brad Lockhart say they tried to intervene in the child's life because they felt the little girl was at risk.
A close friend of Brad's, and his ex-father-in-law both say they offered to take in Shaniya rather than let her live with her mother, because they say when the child was in the custody of her mother, bad things happened to her.
"My wife says she saw cigarette burns on Shaniya's arms," said Brad's friend Tim Allen, who says he is very angry over what happened.
Byron Coleman, Brad's ex-father-in-law, said Shaniya "had burns on her legs, arms and things" after visits with her mother.
"She had a cigarette burn on the corner of her eye, which she claimed her grandma did when she went over there," added Shaniya's half sister Cheyenne Lockhart.
The three all claimed that the 5-year-old suffered physical abuse while in the custody of her mother.
"When you wanted sex that's where you went," Coleman said. "You knew what the girl was doing. You knew what she associated with, so why place your daughter in that situation?"
Because of that, Coleman blames Lockhart for Shaniya's death.
"To me Shaniya would be alive today if she wasn't placed in that situation," Coleman claims.
Coleman says he offered to give Shaniya a home, but says Brad declined his offer.
Allen tells a similar story.
"He had an alternative, I gave him a way out," Allen explained; however Lockhart would not let Allen take care of Shaniya.
"I'm fighting mad. All this could have been avoided," Allen said.
Allen had already taken in Shaniya's half sister Cheyenne, because she said her dad wouldn't take care of her.
And Cheyenne says Brad did not provide for Shaniya.
"He didn't take care of her, his girlfriends took care of her," she said. "He loved her, but she was raised by other people. He hasn't been in her life."
Meanwhile, the Cumberland County Department of Social Services said it can not comment on what it was doing in regard to Shaniya because those comments might compromise the on-going criminal investigation.

I think people are blaming the father for returning her to the *source* of the cigarette burns.

This "mother" is absolutely disgusting...a true monster. But it is also hard to comprehend why this little girl's father would have sent her back into that environment (although his blame is far less than the mother's monstrous acts). I certainly don't think he had any way of knowing that Shaniya would be killed and probably did not realize that the mother would prostitute her own child, but it should have been obvious that she would not be going into a good situation.

yeah, definitely read the comments on the link from the NC web site.....sickening. Antoinette a coke whore and everyone knew it. The father gives off very fishy vibes. He did not have her best interests in mind letting her go with her crack whore egg donor. Poor Shaniya was screwed from the get-go.

Whoa. Man oh man. Wish I could see the news reports some of these people have seen, the inside of the mother's trailer eg. One of the posters at this link says it's obvious no one who ever saw the inside of the place would have allowed that child to go there. The two men interviewed are certainly angry with the father - and his friends - for his negligence and general indifference to all his children, and especially toward Shaniya. She was truly a child no one cared about. Why on earth wouldn't they all give her up for adoption? She'd have been so valued by people who loved her then.

It's a little hard to hide cigarette burns. Returning a child to a household where this sort of abuse takes place is incomprehensible and does make the person that does this responsible if future abuse happens as they have prior knowledge. This is not rocket science.

The father's behavior is incomprehensible to me. I think there's more to it than has been publicized. Certainly there were other people very anxious to take over the care of the little girl. She wasn't lucky with either of her birth parents, poor little thing.

The death penalty is too good for a mother who does something like this to her own child (or any child). Apparently the father was told by friends/family members that the child had come home from visits to her mother with cigarette burns, or at the very least that it was a very unwholesome and dangerous environment. And yet he not only let her go back to visit, he let the child go *live* with the mother. So yes, he is partly responsible morally, if not legally IMHO. The ability to successfully gestate a fetus shouldn't be the primary motivating factor in deciding where a child gets to live, and it sounds like there were far better caregivers for this child in the father's own family.

I believe I read that he's some kind of contractor who spends a lot of time away from home, and out of state, pursuing work. So his sister was really the primary caretaker of Shaniya. There is probably a backround with the custody issue, since it had never been settled, what I don't know.
