Kevin Chandler, the Indianapolis man police say stabbed his 11-month-old son, then threw him out a car window. INDIANAPOLIS — A man accused of stabbing his 11-month-old son in the back, then throwing the wounded boy out the window of a parked car was still on the loose Thursday, a day after the stabbing, police said.
The kitchen knife was still in Devin Chandler's's back Wednesday night when he was rushed to a hospital for treatment, according to Speedway Police. The boy was listed in stable condition at Riley Hospital for Children Thursday.
"He was conscious, but the knife was buried all the way to the handle," Speedway Detective Jim Thiele said. Police were still searching for the father, Kevin Chandler, 31, on Thursday.
Thiele said police believe Chandler and the boy's mother, Angela Limbrock, were arguing as they prepared to leave Limbrock's apartment in Speedway, on the west side of Indianapolis, to visit a friend's house.
Limbrock realized the child's car seat was still inside and handed the baby to Chandler so she could retrieve it.
The baby landed on the parking lot pavement, and when Limbrock picked him up, she saw a knife in his back, according to police.
"We're still trying to determine motive here, but at this point I have no reason to believe he did this to get back at the mother or anything," the detective said.
Chandler drove away in a 2001 blue Chevrolet Malibu, police said. He returned the car to the parking lot about four hours after the 9:50 p.m. incident and entered the mother's apartment, leaving behind the car keys, Theile said.
Police searched all night for Chandler, checking with family and some friends.
He said Limbrock told police that Chandler fathered the baby and a 5-year-old boy who was in the car at the time. Chandler and Limbrock were not married and were not living together.
Thiele said Chandler is homeless and had been staying with some friends or family.
Speedway Police Capt. Charles Upchurch said Thursday that the department will ask prosecutors to issue an arrest warrant if they do not locate Chandler.
Chandler has been arrested several times for crimes including domestic battery, auto theft and driving while intoxicated, records show. He served time in an Indiana prison for cocaine possession and carrying an unlicensed firearm near school property, records show.
In 2005, police arrested Chandler after he allegedly kicked Limbrock in the head and body.
