WASHINGTON — The Northwest Airlines pilots who overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles have filed appeals of their license revocations with the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Federal Aviation Administration revoked the licenses of Capt. Timothy Cheney of Gig Harbor, Washington, and First Officer Richard Cole of Salem, Oregon, last week. The agency said the pilots put the 144 passengers of Northwest Flight 188 in serious danger on Oct. 21 when they failed to communicate with anyone on the ground for 91 minutes despite repeated attempts by air traffic controllers and their own airline to reach them.
Cheney and Cole told investigators they lost track of time and place while working on crew scheduling on their laptops. They said they didn't realize their situation until a flight attendant contacted them on the intercom to ask when the plane would be landing. By then, the Airbus A320 was over Wisconsin at 37,000 feet. The pilots turned the plane around and landed safely in Minneapolis.

Should these guys lose their livelihood for this while 99% of americans routinely drive while yakking on a cell phone?? That really puts the public at risk since there is no auto-pilot in a car. But nobody gives a damn about that even if a cell driver kills someone!!!

They absolutely should lose their livelihood. They violated serious safety regulations. And as someone else wrote earlier, this situation could have been a lot different if their destination had been Seattle. Auto-pilot isn't going to turn you around just because you are reaching the point where you will have to make a water landing due to not enough fuel to circle back to Seattle. Even with auto-pilot, someone still has to navigate, and ummmm, fly the plane. If two pilots think other activities are more important than aviate, navigate, communicate (apparently the computers were more important than all three mandatory tasks) then they should be two EX-pilots. -Dave

Yes, because unlike a car, an airplane can do damage to people/things that matter.

Speak English much lately, seppo?

No one is defending what they did. But isn't the penalty too severe in light of how accepting we are of car drivers who play with cell phones while driving??? Again i say cell-driving is much more dangerous to others than what these clowns did.

You are entitled to your opinion, and you are entitled to be wrong. -Dave

Since that someone will be talking on their own cell phone, why would anyone give a damn?

Used a cell? I don't think you have any cells to use! It appears you lost any, you may have had.

She's never used a cell phone because she hasn't figured out how. Probably still using a rotary dial.
