I intend to transfer my home digital movies to my PC, edit them and add subtitles - then burn them to DVD's. I'm looking for a decent, free movie editor. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the web site. I'll spend some time reading through it. But it sure would help me get started if I had some suggestions on getting the right software (free or not). I've never done this before so I'm a brand new newbie to video editing.

It may be a relatively small market for those who "add subtitles" to their "home movies". Still, most video editing programs have the ability to overlay text, as you may wish.
Both Apple and Microsoft offer "free" video editing programs with their program suites.
What video and audio format(s) are your movies in?

I use a program called DV_DATECODE.EXE that will extract the date/time code from each frame of a DV or D8 tape. That file can them be added as a normal, removable subtitle to the final DVD.
The program I use for the DVD authoring is called TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4. The program is not free, but it is well worth the money. It will handle two subtitle tracks so you can have the Date/Time on one, and second one for anything you want to type in by hand.
