Subject: Dfining God out of existence

If you start with a definition like:

"God is a universal force about which nothing is known." ...

... you have something that is impossible to argue with or even disagree with (rather like the Higgs boson or 'God' particle).

Once you start adding things to it you make it less likely with each attribute.

"God is a universal force that loves you."

"God is a universal force that loves you and has things that it wants you to do."

"God is a universal force that loves you and has things that it wants you to do and created everything we see and punishes those who don't believe in it and rewards those that believe in it and talks to some people and refuses to talk to others and defies and proof but thrives on believe through faith alone."

Maybe it should be left as completely unknown.

I agree one hundred percent, if we need a definition of God, that is.
I like another one "everything exists in potentiality".

imo anybody who tries to define 'god' is speculating, stating their
personal opinion or just repeating what they have been taught. most
people who state that 'god' is talking to them live in a padded room.

I was just listening to the guy on the Christian radio station telling
his listeners that if they talk to God then God will talk to them.
Christians claim they speak with God on a regular basis. You spend a
lot of time being completely wrong.

And I see no difference between people claiming that "God" talks to
them and your claims that you have experienced "spirits." I don't see
that your fantasies are so superior to theirs that they belong in a
padded room and you don't.

yes neil....xtians talk to god all the time...its called 'prayer'. and
yes neil, you also hear people say that 'god' told them to do it? you
hear it all the time on CNN when someone has just committed a bunch of
murders or when a TV evangelist is bullshitting his audience.

ummm....to repeat (again) ... i have never claimed my experiences
(fantasies to you) to be superior to anything have i? if so, please
point it out or not... you just say whatever seems to be echoing in
your cranium, so it has no relation to how i feel. but feel free to
state your misguided opinions as they are just like water off a ducks
back, although i suppose they somehow make you feel better  ;-)

Actually, a MAN said that god said that.  Try not beg too many
questions.

P.S. You do realize that appealing to inscrutability is self-
defeating, right?  Not to mention the fact

When you lecture me about how I should give up reason so that I can
have the same experiences (etc), then yes.

I did, many times. I just did it again.

It's fairly narcissistic to presume to give someone permission to talk
in an internet newsgroup when you aren't a moderator.

There's another claim I don't believe.

> although i suppose they somehow make you feel better  ;-)

I'm happy to have a rational explanation for your wild claims, yes.

Just because you studied something doesn't meant that what you studied

Or, better yet, one can see through such an example that the objective

More clearly, I'm just noting that humanistic evaluations are not
