Subject: Beauty - Only Skin Deep?
What is the purpose of beauty and does it have a purpose?

It couldn't be that a woman's beauty was designed to attract men for
procreation  because fat ugly women find men and have babies also,
don't ask me why or how, must have something to do with "closing
time".

So why is there beauty?
People admire beauty and usually beauty gets more attention, it's like
a power, a natural high, a thrill, a rush, a fever.  Why is that?

Some men seek out a beautiful woman as a symbol of status.  Others
look and perceive the inability to provide for the assumed high
maintenance.  Some become jealous of the beauty of someone else and
perceive it as a threat, while others just look and salivate.

If beauty has a purpose then surely ugly must have it as well, and not
just for the ugly jokes, no?  I don't really know of any beauty jokes
but there are plenty of ugly ones. There are no jokes that start off
with "Your mama is so beautiful that..........". Can you make one up?

I don't see women striving to look ugly, though there are some that
might......well you know.   The business of beauty is in the hundreds
of billions of dollars range.

We perceive beauty in other materialistic ways such as a beautiful car
or house, a flower or color.  So is beauty just a perception, a feel
good perception?  The sight of beauty often stimulates us and gives
rise to blood pressure while ugly is something we tend to avoid. Why?

We don't like to drive around in ugly cars so there must be something
to this beauty thing.

We know that beauty has nothing to do with intelligence or ability, so
then what is beauty for?  What do we do with it except gaze upon it?

Does beauty have meaning beyond visual perception?

'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'
(John Keats, Ode on a Grecian Urn)
http://www.bartleby.com/101/625.html

No, that's not really my response - although I hope it helps the
discussion along somewhat.

Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy which I mistrust most, because
almost all of what I've read of it seems to be such inadequate
rubbish. and yet, beauty has and, I hope, will remain a lodestone in
my life.

What makes women attractive to men and vice versa is somewhat complex,
but there are lots of explanations of this phenomenon for those who
care to look - in the end much of it has to do with hormones and
biochemistry. But I don't think this kind of explanation really gets
to what beauty is about. It doesn't explain my reaction to
Michelangelo's Pietà, or the sight of Moscow's Red Square in moonlight
after a fresh fall of snow, or Bach's "Air" from the Suite No. 3 in D
Major (BMW 1068) or the smile of an old. half-demented woman I know,
which can light up a whole room.

Beauty is ... aaah ... perhaps the other unmentioned gift of the gods
which remained in the box after Pandora opened it ...

Kabbalistically, 'Beauty' is derived from the balance of 'Mercy' and
'Justice'.  And in that statement, there is no mention of
'appearance'.  Beauty is perceived by us, like good and evil.  In
itself, physical beauty is as illusory as good and evil, yet just as
readily perceived.  It changes from time to time (Page 3 'models'
would NOT have appeared beautiful to the men of the 1920s, as they
liked the 'Flapper' look) and from culture to culture (Samoan men,
generally, like their women to look more like 'Mama Cass' Elliot than
Mischa Barton).

Real beauty is seeing the intricacies of nature and how they
complement one another and has far more to do with understanding than
appearances.  All of life's 'little imperfections' ARE the perfections
that make the universe full of beauty; but, one needs to perceive with
one's Mind's Eye rather than one's physical eyes.

Aaaah, gift of the Gods, I guess that is one of putting in, something
like the love of a good cuisine dinner amidst a beautiful sunset.
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I guess that is
true.
They also say that beauty is only skin deep, but some people have
really deep skin. lol

You think good and evil is a perception? As far as models go you are
are using the fashion element but let's strip it down to the naked
beauty regardless of garb.  The 1920's model and the 2009 model are
still beautiful women.  It's not a perception.  I rather appreciate
your last paragraph.

Beauty has always seemed to be more local than the cosmetic air-brush
fetish sprayed over golden idols.  The feel of willow in hand and
leather despatched over the boundary with the sweetest 'clop', the
taste of fear induced by sweet chin music, breathed in the follow-up
to the master batsman about to fall to the slower one next ball.  The
beauty of buying the jug of ale as victors of the fray.  The
impossible catch by the worst fielder ever in the dark last moments of
what in destiny seemed a boring draw.  The soldiers who give up to the
flowers.  Turning over on the wet bit and not minding in the least ...
I know of no teleology of beauty, only antecedents.

moved when I see it.

Love that abides is beautiful. Gratitude that proves is beautiful.
Concern that acts is beautiful.

No doubt we should know about all the 'sperm wars' going on in what we
confuse with beauty?  What might we say about the purpose of beauty
when looking at a field of green amongst plots of scrub?  Or watching
a cosmetics advert telling women they are so ugly they need expensive
slime to cover themselves with being worth it?

A couple of girls went past our window yesterday playing with a
netball - they were going round the block passing the ball to each
other and did this several times.  They were very pretty girls, but
the beauty was just seeing them at play, enjoying a silly game.  The
Arabs have some relish of fat on women - I never quite got to grok
this or their music.  Burmese crowds will stand blissfully transfixed
by music that makes me wonder about the balls freezing off a brass
monkey in near tropical heat!  I wait for the day when our newsreaders
and weather floosies are not easy on the eye, perhaps in wheelchairs -
there might be beauty in a moment when we appreciate something other
than the bland, cosmetic or pathetically sexual.

Gray" for the film.//Why have you excluded fat ugly men from the hunt
and chase? Why do some fat-uglies sometimes produce handsome/beautiful
off-spring?//Are you speaking of natural beauties or artificial
beauties? Can one ever take credit for natural beauty when they are
not responsible for its creation?  What qualities besides the visual
must be present to be part of the whole? Is that a requirement or a
separate judgement? See ugly car example. :-) How do cultural
standards affect the concept of beauty and is this betrayed in a Miss
Universe contest? How is beauty dealt with in art- as a warning of
death? Why are handsome/beautiful heros/ heroines of literature and
opera often doomed? Include movie stars and pop celebrities, if you
must. How are other beautiful objects used as a reminder of the
fleeting nature of life? Why are beautiful youths sent to die in
battles while the old men plot wars? Why are museums considered holy
when they house the thefts from other nations and cultures gained
through wars and pillaging or economic plunderings?

I would think that the whole concept of beauty is subjective.  There
is the inner beauty of a person, something not seen visually but
perceived mentally and emotionally.  Ugly men were not excluded but I
certainly don't think of men when I think of beauty.  Still you would
be hard pressed to come up with a beauty joke.  I don't think beauty
and ugly have any set standards unless of course you are considering a
pageant but generally it is all about personal preferences.

If it will make you happy "He" was so ugly that when he was born the
doctor told the parents "shit happens".

Terms like beauty and elegance abound in descriptive science history -
though are known in the lab as 'waiting for a blow job from god'.
Remember those ski jump competitions where judges were allowed to mark
on style, elegance and so on - along comes some guy who outjumps the
others by 40 feet and loses.  The marking in the Eurovision Song
Contest has been so bent that Franco was able to buy victory for
Spain.  It seems concepts like beauty may be a little more than merely
subjective Slip.  A severe punishment for me would be to have to sit
through Eurovision.

“…I would think that the whole concept of beauty is subjective…” – SD

While but yet another possible semantic issue, as I see it, the
concept of beauty is an ideal. Each person has one. And, in its purest
form, I suggest that there is commonality. Similar concepts would
include truth, equality, the good etc. As with the ideal forms, there
appears to be a universal apprehension at the core of the thing. It is
only when one goes into attempting to use words to describe it and/or
objectify ‘beauty’ in this case that our individual subjectivity
becomes involved.

The Zen notion of original face is, to me, the crux of the notion of a
beautiful face ( http://www.kwanumzen.org/primarypoint/v08n2-1991-summer-wkzm-whatisyo...
)  It is who we are in essence, and I think that a truly beautiful
face is one that reflects this radiance.  I have seen it in my loved
ones in moments of deep intimacy (not sex, but not exclusive of) where
each truly connects with the other and all constructs are
peripheral.   To me, someone able to relate in this way is truly
beautiful.

I see beauty as perfection.  To be beautiful is to be close to
perfection.  In humans this often translates into the young and
healthy.  Innocence could play a part as well.  Who doesn't in some
form or another yearn for their lost innocence?  Of course; some of us
still haven't lost it.  This is beautiful in it's own way and I envy
those of you who pull it off.

It is subjective in that each of us sees perfection in a different
way.  There is nothing pretty about a battle scarred stallion staring
down an approaching rival poacher and then the subsequent bloody
fight.  But there IS something beautiful about it.  To me anyway.
Where as I see a pot of flowers as, well, a pot full of flowers.
Pretty, I guess, but boring and uninteresting.

What is it's purpose?  To keep us interested.  Otherwise; what's the
point in living?
