What flipped you over, Chris?  I'm not citing "hoodoo" nor am I on an
edge whereas given your posts the same can't be said.  Just FYI, the
89th Military Police Brigade is permanently stationed at Ft. Hood.
There were plenty of both MPs and civilian police hired by the base on
hand.

And don't you find it at least out of the ordinary that we are
experiencing a blossoming of mass murders?

The hoodoo in question was religion, Gruff, not anything you cited.
Invisible entities in the sky giving directions.

My family is military, Gruff. I'm aware of the 89th. Are you aware of the
Readiness Center there? It is not, and was not, patrolled by MP's. It's
covered by Civilian Police, which was the point of my initial response to
your point regarding military police. In case you forget, you posted:

"I think it is also noteworthy that in spite of being in the middle of
a military base where there are many trained and armed soldiers and
military police, none of that training or armament was able to prevent
this tragedy from occurring."

Now, stop perceiving irrational response, and look at your point, and my
counterpoint:

You: None of the training or armament or military police was able to prevent
this tragedy from occurring,

Me: In the area where this occurred, there was no immediate access to
armament, and no MP's on patrol. This seems to indicate it was chosen with
forethought for those qualities.

Now, who's flipped, and what's irrational? I believe you are completely
misreading me, and also the facts around the shooting, which is why I
provided you with a link detailing the specifics of the incident. Here are
some excerpts:

"The rampage lasted for thirty minutes as Hassan entered a Pre-Deployment
Processing Center (PDP), jumped on top of a table and began shooting down on
the cubicles below. Emergency responders and police responded quickly and an
officer was able to confront the shooter and take him down in an exchange of
gunfire that left both wounded. Some witnesses to the event have stated that
Major Hassan was yelling "Allahu Akbar" (meaning: "God is Great") as he
fired at the unarmed people in the area."

Do you find it likely that MP's would take longer to respond to a gunfire
incident occurring within their patrol area than civilian police officers
for whom this would be out of jurisdiction, were it covered by MP's? I don't
know what it is you think I'm trying to say, but the facts of the case are
pretty clear, and public knowledge. Perhaps this clarification will help.

This is Fort Hood:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=fort+hood...

Notice how much space there is between the individual areas? This isn't a
typical base structure where it is centralized with heavy population in a
main area. There is a heavy mixture of military and civilian personnel
spread out over a large area. Hassan specifically targeted an area which was
least likely to contain armed military personnel, and began killing there.

Now, what's irrational about anything I've said here?

To clarify here, because it seemed from your response that you entirely
misperceived the direction of this quote, I was referring to folks on the
edge (Hassan) blending hoodoo (religion) into their reality. This was not in
any way aimed at you.

I'm a survivor of unarmed guard duty against expected armed attack.
It would have been easy for the IRA to take out a whole police station
(or Manchester Airport) back in the 70s with a couple of guns.  You
can imagine this was a very unpleasant duty - more traumatic frankly
than being shot at when you are armed.  The reason I started this
thread was the memory of this ridiculous duty and later experience in
which it was necessary to guard oneself and squad from the buffoon
sadists who made up the officer cadre.
On the first reports I thought it was over quickly - but it now seems
no armed response was anywhere near the incident.  Guns everywhere
isn't the answer, but this looks like a massive failure to protect on
both occasions. I'm not sure which incident is worse in this respect.

Chris?  Do you know by any chance whether people would generally be
barred from carrying guns at the scene of this US atrocity?
I love some hints on the news that we must regard this matter as only
possibly related to the guy being Muslim.  I should co-co.
Over here we keep our troops well apart from their weaponry.  Some of
the street guns here would make you laugh and we generally have much
less trouble than you do in the US.  The link between more guns more
deaths is now made, and given the number of accidental deaths we might
wonder why forearms aren't better fool-child-proofed.  However, it's
not the usual gun control stuff that gets me about these two
incidents.  I just don't understand why we aren't protecting people
who are obvious targets better - and that would mean guns in the hands
of alert observers.

There is a difference between a "tragedy" (Obama's term) and an act of
terrorism (radical Islam's intentions). The "alteration" is in their
brain and faith.

Yes- so were the terrorists on 9-11 as well as the kidnappings in Iran
of USA embassy members 30 years ago along with the other intentional
acts of terror against the West. There was sabotage by Germans in the
USA during WWI along with war relief to their homeland but I think
that was stopped with the Alien and Sedition Act. You might be
surprised to learn how much we owe to German industrial know-how in
the USA. At any rate, with a Muslim-Christian president who seems bent
on appeasing the Muslim world, it's no surprise what happened at Fort
Hood. Maybe we will get another novel like Roth's "The Plot Against
America" with a new set of events and characters.

Christian? I would have thought that the specific self-definitions of
both precludes belonging to the other.

The Muslim-Xtians live in the same world as the Roman Catholic-
Protestants (i.e. with the fairies at the bottom of Rev. Ian Paisley's
garden).  Of course, Jews, Muslims and Xtians are all sons of Abraham
and we could form a new terrorist group on this basis.  We would
terrorise the single faith believers as intellectually challenged by
multi-tasking, incapable of loving women as equals and treating them
generally like delinquent children, putting all non-converts on that
inhospitable island used to kick off the Falklands Farce (St.
Georgia?) to live off algae and faith.  There is probably less
contradiction in being a Muslim-Xtian-Jew than being any of the
apartheid species who practises war and woman clubbing (and it doesn't
stop the crazies).  The key thing in religion Francis is not avoiding
contradiction but being loony enough to accept all kinds of it
including killing people for the sheer love of gourd (no typo).  I
would not be happy working with people who bowed East 5 times a day in
this conflict, even to the point that I would not intervene when sex-
starved marines mistook this as an offer.  To ask people to work with
anyone professing religion is too much for me, but when that religion
clearly marks one as the enemy, there is reason to exclude it on the
basis of everyone else's rights.

Weapons are well secured and controlled on base, as a rule. I don't know
about barred, but as a matter of practice, it just generally isn't done. We
have liberty oriented gun laws here, but a culture that (despite the facade)
is generally against gun ownership, not as a matter of law,  but as a matter
of polite society. Everyone wants the right, but few want to be so crass as
to utilize it.

I have no issues with being perceived as crass... ;)

dictate to kill the infidels.

Completely forgotten due to the Ft. Hood cowardly slayings is the
break-in at Bangor WA. Navy base by a few old, crazy people.  My
brother is a civilian working for the Dpt. of the Navy in Bremerton
and he ended up having to deal with the fall-out.  These people got no
where near anything important but it's still embarrassing and
potentially dangerous.  I'm sure security will be beefed up even more
now due to these two incidences.

It's a real bummer too because before 9/11 I missed a chance to go on
a nuclear submarine.  I ended up skipping the tour to stay and help my
brother build his dock(he lives on Kitsap Lake).  Mom and Dad went and
had a blast.  Mark said he'd get me on one another time and then the
next year, 9/11.  Forget about it.  Family can't even go on the base
any more.  Fucking terrorists piss me off.

Agreed.  It's infection of PC.  This feel good
why-can't-we-all-get-along malarky has no place in the armed forces.
Yes, we need Muslims in the military and it might be a good idea to
have Muslim shrinks but this guy was trouble.  I'm sure his superiors
just thought he was trying to get out of going to war and weren't
going to let him get away with it.

I still think he was self-medicating in a way only a shrink could get
away with.  We'll see.  I hope he lives and comes out of his coma.  If
I was a praying man I'd be doing that too.

Of course, this incident happened at Ft. Hood.  That's the centre
for Mind Control operations by the US Army (and has been since the
'80s when it was all handled by Col. M. Aquino, the rather infamous
satanist and leader of The Temple of Set).  Not that there's any
chance that some psy-ops guy (an Aquino operative??) had a little
hypnosis session with a psychologist (the accused) and the outcome
serves as a pretense for more Islamophobia.  Islam has nothing to do
with the what happened as Islam forbids murder (as well as suicide,
for those pre-disposed to think that suicide-bombings are a form of
martyrdom--they aren't as far as Islam is concerned).  I think the
most  interesting aspect OF this incident was the fact it was Ft.
Hood.  That alone says something suspicious; at least to me.
