I read a story about 20 years ago in a science fiction magazine; I'm pretty sure it wasn't F&SF or Analog. In this story, an alien race was about at the end of their rope because their germ plasm was worn out. In a last-ditch attempt to get some newer genetic material, they created a giant (to them) sentient being in the shape of a very small woman. She comes to earth via some hyperspatial mechanism and is tasked with gathering some new genetic material via a very personal approach to a human male. He is put off at first by her size but is eventually talked into contributing, and the race is saved.
For some reason, I have a dim notion that this story was by Piers Anthony, but I'm not sure of that at all.

_Pornucopia_ is a collection of three short stories.
One of which being the one you were looking for; the other two are....well, one's called _Up Schist Creek_, and the other one is a few miles south of Armin Meiwes territory...too far south for him, I add just in case he's got Usenet access in his prison (look, I wouldn't wish Piers Anthony on _anybody_).
Although apparently he's become a vegetarian now.
Meiwes, that is.
Anyway, if you find the collection, I hope you like the story; the others are definitely....memorable.

I don't know what the correct title is in _Pornucopia_, but in _Anthonology_ this story is called "The Bridge".
