Better to prepare for a rugged tournament by playing a tough OOC schedule, even if you take a couple of losses, than to pad your ranking by beatnig up on cupcakes before starting your conference play. It's a model that has worked for Arizona for 15 years.

While true for UNC and other teams that have a whole lot of talent and experience, if you've mostly got players that have previously had very little playing time, and/or your coach needs to do a lot of experimenting with player combinations and game plans, a goodly number of cupcakes in the preseason is probably a better way to go. You won't usually be able to pad your ranking a whole lot, though, for most values of cupcake.

Well, here's the way it works at UNC.
The team gets lazy and loses the first half and gets chewed out at half time.
Or, they don't make the spread but win the game anyway and the coach says "We will treat that like a loss".

The Big East is going to be awesome this year - Nova, Yukon and the Hoopies of course, but also the 'Cuse, G'Town, & ND. And Louisville, Cinci and Marquette will also be decent.
