Subject: (Meta) About My Heartattack
Since I have friends that have asked from usenet here are the details:

When I was working on 10/29/09 I thought I pulled a muscle but it
seems I had a mild heart attack. I kept feeling my left hand go numb
so I said after Halloween if it's still going numb I'll go see my doc.
It stopped Sunday but started Tuesday so I went in on Wed. and my doc
sent me for bloodwork at the hospital. He said I'd either be sent home
or I'd be admitted. Had no clue what I'd be admitted for but as I was
talking on my cell a nurse ran out asking for me. She screamed to come
with her because I was having a heart attack. I looked at her and
asked,'ME?? But I have no chest pain or shortness of breath. I feel
fine are you sure it's ME??" I had to have a heart stent procedure due
to a 90% blockage in one artery. The worst part of this all was the
constant needles being stuck in me for blood. Took 2 days in the
hospital and now can't lift anything over 5lbs for a week. Can't
return to work for a week. Have to report any weight gains over 5lbs
in the next week. So I quit smoking, have to rest, can't workout and
have to report any 5lb weight gain, how is that even possible? Anyway,
I'm feeling fantastic and looking forward to this week's vacation!

Do you have to report weight gain just for the next week or is this
permanent?

Just about all the males in my family are smokers...yet I (who doesn't

My father is the same way. He hasn't died from a heart attack yet, but all
the males on my side of the family die of heart attacks shortly after
turning 59. He's nearly 58.

Long story short:  left side first feels like someone tried to inflate
my kidney with helium then a pain that knocked me down.  Got rushed to
the ER, thought it was kidney stones (my mom had them years ago).  After
a battery of tests the doctor says: Cancer.

Yeah...it's like someone just slapped you with a sap glove to wake you up.

Drs say I need to get operated to remove the whole kidney, no chemo, no
radiation.

Afterward the surgeons tell me that I was at Stage 3.5.  I wait six
months more and not only do I have to get it removed, but I would've had
to have gone to chemo to hope it didn't spread past my kidney.

Never smoked, drink occasionally...pretty healthy otherwise.  But you
hear cancer and you're like WHAT THE FUCK?

Been good afterward, regular checkups and no sign of reoccurrence for 3
years now.  Counting my blessings.

Ironically, co-workers' dad died of cancer a couple of years ago.  The
dad didn't notice the extreme weight loss he was going through (a
definite sign of cancer), get checked up and the tumor metastasized and
it spread.  Died within 6 months of diagnosis.

Yeah, Cancer's a fucking bitch.

Glad to hear that things turned out well and good luck to you.  I hope
that in addition to stopping smoking, you look at your diet and make
positive changes.  Artery blockages indicate a lot of gunk in your
system and are generally helped by diet change.

While I understand the discomfort from the needles, it could be
worse.  A colleague of mine recently underwent brain surgery for
pituitary cancer (he's 48).  The first procedure was through the nasal
cavity.  There was a complication a few days later, which required the
surgeons to open his skull, but that wasn't the worst of it.  A bit
later, they had to use a gamma knife.  Basically, they start by taking
a 20lb helmet and they screw it to your skull.  For someone coming out
of brain surgery, a local really doesn't help so you get to feel it
all.  Then they screw the helmet to the table and blast the bits with
radiation.  My friend said, "then the fun comes ... they have to take
the helmet off," and they reverse the procedure.  They give you a
couple of packs for your head and tell you that it should stop
bleeding in a day or two.

He's currently in the "not anything over xlbs program" too, and needs
to go back for an MRI.  Count your blessings and be thankful for what
you have.

Take care.

My grandmother is 92 and probably has the coronary arteries of a 21
year old....she also has never gone a day without dropping some piece
of meat in a massive frying pan filled with oil..........

Im sure old age will catch up with her in the next 10 or so years and
she'll die of renal failure or whatever, but with heart disease you
can't underestimate the importance of the family history.....

well I would try to go down to about 165 or so at that
height......your bp readings seem good.  Congrats on that.

The key with a pt whoe dad died of a heart attack at age 40 and
himself experienced a heart attack at 40 is to get him to 55-60 with
meds, procedures, etc........it is sometimes done.  I hope things work
out.
