Why do we not pay attention to recruiting rankings? Texas is why. My friend Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News reminded us this week that the 2005 signing class at Texas was rated No. 20 in the country by a bunch of the recruiting gurus. The class, which only included 15 players, was ranked No. 4 in the Big 12. Saturday night at Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium Texas fans will say goodbye to that senior class.
We assume the Longhorns (10-0) will beat the struggling Jayhawks (5-5). That will give the senior class, led by Colt McCoy, 43 victories in four years. McCoy, the only quarterback to lead a team to four consecutive 10-win seasons, will break the NCAA Division I-A record for victories by a starting quarterback. He is currently tied with David Greene of Georgia at 42.
Texas will have a chance to win three more games: Texas A&M, the Big 12 championship and, perhaps, the BCS championship. With 46 wins and a national championship, this will be the most successful class in Texas history. Not bad for No. 20.

I believe the 1995 Senior class at Nebraska was ranked even lower than 20th...not sure what the 1997 Senior class was ranked, but they have to be one of the most successful in NCAA history with three MNCs.

It was small, but by Texas standards it wasn't the best...only 8 four star players (compare to the 2010 commit list that has 17 and they ain't finished yet) and who knew Colt McCoy was going to turn out to be one of the all time greats?
But your point stands that the rankings factor quantity into the equation.

Colt McCoy is not a great player. He's a good player surrounded by great talent. He's probably not even the tenth best all-around athlete on that team.
You could make a pretty strong case that Texas let the wrong QB get away. Jevan Snead has done what he's done with a fraction of the talent around him that McCoy has. Switch the two out and I'm pretty sure Texas gets better and Ole Miss gets worse.

Not so sure about that....Colt McCoy has an IT factor not often seen...sure he's surrounded by talent, but he's a tough SOB and he almost always comes up big when needed. I don't think it will translate to the NFL though.

I believe the 1995 Senior class at Nebraska was ranked even lower than 20th...not sure what the 1997 Senior class was ranked, but they have to be one of the most successful in NCAA history with three MNCs.
It is an injustice to identify just one class. But you are right on target with the '95 Huskers. IIRC, NU's entire team (Fr. - Sr.) in 95 never had a Top 10 Recruiting class.

IIRC, U$C has dominated the recruitings (avg. pt.) for about six years straight. Stanford kicked their arse last week for U$C's third loss.

I'd bet you could say that for 90%+ of starting qbs. They just have to be the best qb on the team.

True. If a team signs two 5 star qbs, they get a huge boost, even though only one is likely to play and the other transfer.
Of course, HS qbs are often one of the best athletes on their squad, so they can also play WR, DB, etc......

The size of the class is most dictated by # scholarships available that year. It should not factor in to the ranking. But it does, big time.

Mack has talked about why he doesn't do this. If he tries to sign, say, two top RBs, they are going to know that they are competing for that class's "playing time." He'd have a good chance at losing them both to a school where they know they would be the featured back for that class.
So Mack signs one top RB. The key is deciding which one. Sometimes it's obvious. Adrian Peterson was obvious, and he got away. Cedric Benson was obvious and he signed. But sometimes, the choice is not so obvious. Brown's dilemma has often become selecting the right guy rather than recruiting the right guy.

Well, compare him to Vince Young, or even Jerrod Johnson for that matter. His numbers aren't great, and there's nothing he does on the field that's particularly fearsome.

He's a career 71% passer with 104 TD's and 12,360 yards....if that's not great I don't know what is.

Any QB who can't do that behind that line and with those receivers isn't competent to play Division 1 football.

Yep. Snead is probably the better athlete, but McCoy is a winner. He's got Tebow-like toughness and leadership persona. I'm guessing that the Orangebloods are pretty happy with the production from their qb.

Well, I was referring to this season. Your point about career stats is well taken but I still maintain that this is a classic case of the QB getting too much of the credit for a very good team.
