Obviously, I'm not claiming to be a big fan of the practice of putting up the holiday decorations earlier and earlier. But it's fairly obvious *why* they do it, and why the don't often give other holidays like Thanksgiving the same consideration.
Christmas has become vital for many retailers - a holiday where people are specifically encouraged to go out and buy buy buy. I've always heard that many shops make their yearly profit during this season - the rest of the year, they're just making enough to cover their expenses.

not recently. I can remember a seminary prof talking about how he'd always said that Christmas shouldn't swallow up Thanksgiving, but now it seems to be about to swallow up Halloween -- and that was 20 years ago. I wish that we'd basically start Christmas the day after Thanksgiving--I just think that battle is long since lost.
In fact, I'm not sure they haven't scaled back just a tad. Seems to me that I remember a pretty good Christmas setup in early October one year a few years ago -- not so much the decorations as the emphasis on buying Christmas gifts. Doesn't seem like they're doing that as much.
(Side note: I had a conflict with Target one year because I bought a present for my daughter in early October, we didn't get around to playing with it until the first week of January, it didn't work, and they said "can't take it back because it's been more than 90 days." I was a tad ticked that I'd bought something on *their* Christmas schedule and they didn't want to stand behind it.)
