Your comments on football are on the money. The players wear more than
2 dollars worth of equipment and football requires elaborate game
plans and a evolving strategy as the game progresses. There is more
excitement, more energy and most of all it is interesting. Watching a
bunch a people running around kicking a soccer ball is boring. Rugby
is pointless.

With the exception of the quarterback, though, none of the players
need any brains. American Football is a series of set plays controlled
by the quarterback and the coach; the rest of the players are just
pieces in their chess game. Free-flowing games, such as Rugby Football
and Association Football, by contrast, require the players to do more
than just follow a pre-set pattern; they need to be able to think on
their feet and react to changing circumstances as they occur.

That's a bit harsh, isn't it?  Sometimes we call it a 'field'.

Maybe next year, after they get rid of that Son of a 'Bum' Wade
Phillips. ;-)

Word is that Jerry Jones is considering former Broncos head coach Mike
Shanahan for his next HC.  Having been a Broncos fan for 30 years, I
was ticked off that Broncos owner Pat Bowlen fired Shanahan, and then
the replacement HC decided to let Cutler go to the Bears, so I decided
to return to supporting the team I did as a teenager - the Steelers.

I agree.  Rugby/soccer is for people who just don't quite get WWF
wrestling. ;-P

Yes, but you've just made my point for me - as 'the beautiful game',
soccer is more of a a 'let's fight nice' sport, except when it erupts
into bloody mass fights/brawls between fans.

That's exactly my point, Doc.  It's more of a pure skill/athleticism
game.  Unfortunately, that alone bores me.  To me, its fundamentally
no more exciting than a bar room _dart_ game.

I agree that US football has it's roots/origins in rugby, but it is
rugby_on_*steroids*, with a level of refinement and strategic
granularity that is *unmatched* by any other professional sport.  A
*huge* part of the game also appeals to a more cerebral crowd than the
just the brutish lots that often stir up *riots* with *fights*
erupting on the fields where soccer games are played.  How many times
have you heard of of mass riots/fights at a US football game, where
innocent spectators often get hurt (or sometimes *killed*)?

REAL men (and boys) play rugby. The ball is more or less the same shape
as in American "foot"ball, bot at least it does get kicked properly with
the feet at defined points in the game. And the players don't wear (or
need) all that elaborate padding.

You don't wear padding because you are all a bunch of 140lb pussies.
Let a 240lbs linebacker come play "rugby" with you guys. Hell, a 200lbs
NFL kicker, would push you wimps around.

This thread has been running WAY TOO LONG.

Reminder: American Football = NOT FOOTBALL - it's glorified rugby. Got
that?

There is ONLY ONE FORM OF FOOTBALL. It's played all over the world,
you Americans call it soccer - football, Association Football. There's
no NFL, and no hands - only the goalkeeper can touch the ball.

Football, the one true religion.
