NO. They must remain optimal for the total reproductive fitness of each
fertile form. They can only become equal at death.

JE:-
NO. It means that the fertile form with the better complimentary
catabolic heritable phenotype (the phenotype which maximizes the total
number of fertile forms reproduced per population) can alone be selected.

The better _combination_ can only be selected not the genes for each on
just some imagined, separate fitness basis. This may mean mediocre genes
for both on just a poly-genetic basis become selected in favor of a
combination of much better genes for one paired with hopeless genes for
the other. Note also that in an epistatic fitness there is no such thing
as an always-better-gene for either because "better" is now, 100%
contextual on a NON additive gene by gene fitness basis. Empirically,
not a single poly-genetic gene fitness as been observed (no matter how
fitness is defined). IOW empirically, every gene posses an epistatic
fitness.
