I think the analysis of why Matlab is so successful is different from

I agree. This is due to low prices students pay per copy but that doesn't explain everything as Scilab and wxMaxima are free.
I will add a different slant to your rant. I think there is too much emphasis on getting answers as opposed to knowing how they are arrived at. Matlad has so many functions built in so that almost everything is a subroutine call and all the student needs to do is pass it the right parameters. The students don't need to be bothered with knowing what happens inside the function call.

I am talking about US universities. I noticed the following (this is based
on my own experience).
Matlab is still the king of the hill in Engineering education (EE, ME,
Civil, aerospace, engineering mechanics, etc..).
Mathematica nor Maple or any other "CAS" system to be found. (go to
engineering dept. computer labs, and count how many PC's have matlab vs.
