Can you provide us with the evidence you use to declare that a whale is significantly less complex, overall, than a hippopotamus? And why you think that, for biologists studying evolution, the *goal* of evolution is supposed to be a a secular increase in complexity regardless of what will lead to increased reproductive success?

What is your metric for complexity? Number of genes? Number of moving parts? Size?
For instance, suppose a gene is duplicated. Each copy perfoms a subset of its original function (such that both copies are needed to perform all the original function), but in addition each copy independently performs some *new* function. Would this not count as an increase in complexity? There are plenty of Google hits for papers describing exactly that process as it relates to evolution.
