I don't know how birds would have affected the massive volcanic activity of the time and the bolide impact. They may have affected the felt effect of gravity, disrupted the crustal integrity and attracted the asteroid.

He held to a theory similar to yours: That as continental drift and the lowering of sea levels brought isolated species together, they killed each other off by spreading their contagious diseases.
There are a lot of problems with his theory and your theory: Why weren't mammals affected by their own plagues? In our time, rats have spread bubonic plague. Why weren't crocodiles killed off? Why were the sea-going plesiosaurs killed off? Why were the flying pterodactyls killed off? And wouldn't the spreading of the Atlantic Ocean during the Cretaceous have made a worldwide plague less likely?
And finally, what kind of a plague would cause a 100.000% mortality rate among every single species of dinosaur, from the smallest to the largest? Not even a few dinosaurs had natural immunity, as is the case with most plagues in recorded history?
Still, this teaches a lesson for the debates over global warming and other scientific issues: There are always a very few dissenters from the prevailing scientific consensus. Occasionally they turn out to be right. But most of the time, they are wrong.

Steven (and all) what do we know about the evolution of disease and then the evolution (or reaction) of antibodies and white blood cells? (a bit rhetorical).
Our dinner party discussion began with our current swine flu and then carried back in time, to a super flu the dinosaurs and many of it's relatives could not adapt to quickly enough to prevent the population from falling to extinction levels, that immune species would niche occupy.
The discussion then proceeded to Avian flu, then to migration, and the time at which birds evolved migration. I think this is the best group to get expert opinion, evidentially. Thanks Ken
